Specific Measurable and Realistic Training

Specific: Each driving lesson shall be based on 1 or more specific training objectives. Lessons will be conducted in 3 stages, beginning with an introduction and revision, progressing through to the practical training objectives whilst summarising with a detailed analysis and record of client development and achievement. Throughout each of their clients' training course, instructors shall plan, prepare and execute a separate training program based specifically on their clients' individual levels of competence at each driving skill.

Measurable. Clients can measure the progress of their training at any given period. Training is based on 43 measurable driving skills, with these skills having been organised into 3 key stages of development. Each skill progresses through 5 levels of development finalising at the independent test standard. This aims to ensure specific standards of competence are achieved at each skill, whilst clearly highlighting those for which particular attention should be paid. As each client progresses from stage 1 (introduced) to stage 5 (independent at test standard), a written record of competence shall be made. At the end of each training session, the instructor will discuss and agree with their client the appropriate level of personal development that will have been achieved, based on those objectives set out at the beginning of the training session. The critical aspect of this record is that of the instructor and client reaching agreement on the level of competence to record.

Realistic: All driver training conducted by Smart instructors will be provided in a realistic training environment. Smart Driver Training does not use vehicle simulators or other such devices as each training session shall be conducted on public roads in a smart, clean and up to date modern car. Each car is fitted with dual controls in order to manage the health and safety of both the instructor and their client. Training will be conducted on public roads on all occasions providing the appropriate and realistic driving environment from the very start. As each client progresses, their Smart trainer will gain agreement to conduct a mock test aimed at ensuring any weak areas are identified and subsequently resolved prior to them attending the DSA practical test. The Smart mock test is designed so replicate the DSA practical test as closely as possible allowing each client to determine how they are most likely to perform on the day.

It is the policy of Smart Driver Training to provide driving lessons predominantly in 2-hour sessions. We believe strongly that learning such a comprehensive and practical skill as driving a car is far less effective when instruction is provided in sessions of 1 hour or less. The Smart 2-hour training lesson allows for more comprehensive instruction and the practice of new learning objectives, it is more effective when consolidating previously taught driving skills and reduces the overall amount of time spent learning to drive. In summary, we hold that such a policy is the most cost effective approach towards our clients' investment.
